Define Observation Period

Per default, we suppose that you want to observe and analyze the whole video from start to end.

If that applies to your situation:

Start coding, following the directions in the section that fits your needs:

Arrow-Right-OrangeEVENT SAMPLING - Log Behavioral Events
Arrow-Right-OrangeTIME SAMPLING - Interval based Scores

Define Time Segments for the Observation

If you do NOT want to analyze the whole video, you can specify the time frame within which your observations are required. This is especially helpful if your video file contains different sessions that are to be analyzed separately.

As always, there are several methods to achieve this:

Arrow-Right-OrangeDataSet-based time borders - Specify the part of the video to be observed by manually defining a corresponding DataSet.

Click Start - Edit - Add DataSet Btn_AddSet to create a new empty DataSet.

This new Set appears underneath the last line in your document if no Set line was selected.

SetName

Note: Setting those borders does NOT mean that only that specified part of the video can be played.

Position the video at the start of your observation period.

Press CTRL+[1] to enter this time value as the start time of the selected line.

Position the video at the end of your observation period.

Press CTRL+[2] to enter this time value as the offset of the selected line.

IMPORTANT: To ensure that only the specified periods are reflected in the statistics, you need to disable the Update DataSet Time boundaries option in the Start - Current document - Properties, as is described in Prevent Update of Time Borders.

Arrow-Right-OrangeEvent-based Periods - If your detailed observations are focused on specific time frames before and after certain Events:

Read the section Observe Adjoining Intervalls to learn about yet another powerful and time-saving INTERACT functionality.

TIP:If you double click a predefined Event or DataSet (or press F12), INTERACT automatically pauses at the offset of this selected line, as long as you did not manually pause the video in-between.
This means you can log mutually exclusive Codes in the coding mode Standard while a line is played and the video pauses at the end of the selected time frame. Even using the coding mode Complex is possible, but it does NOT work with the Lexical coding mode, which automatically pauses at the end of each Event.
