Introduction to LogSquare

Thank you for using Mangold LogSquare!
LogSquare is an easy to use but powerful data logging software, enabling you to record the screen, web cam and user activities on a Windows computer.

IMPORTANT: The mouse cursor cannot be visualized for LogSquare Projects that were recorded in LogSquare 5 ! Make sure you keep an older version of LogSquare or follow the directions in Convert older LogSquare Projects.

The principle of LogSquare

LogSquare offers you:

oFull featured Screencast features (supporting multiple monitors as well as a single window)

oUser video and audio recording (using a webcam)

oUser activity logging (key strokes, mouse clicks, user entries, web pages etc.)

oVisualize Eye movements (if you connect one or more Eyetracking device(s))

oTask management with time control (no on-site host required)

oParticipant controlled coding tool (to manually log user impressions)

oViewing room facilities (for external observers)

oObserver controlled coding and comments (to manually log impressions)

oChat functionalities for communication between participant and observer

All information is collected within the same project file for easy analysis.

In order to perform this complex set of tasks, LogSquare is actually split into three applications:

LS_Rekorder_start
Arrow-Right-OrangeLogSquare Recorder - Recording engine that performs the actual recording of:

oScreen content,

oUser activities (keyboard entries and mouse clicks),

oUser video (through a webcam),

oUser audio (through  microphone)

oGaze trails (if a compatible Eye-Tracker is available)

Additionally, the LogSquare Recorder handles the task management and observational Coding during a session.

All predefined Codes and tasks are stored in a *.LogsquareScenario file, which can be assigned to a session within the Recorder on the participant's computer.

Each recording session is referred to as a 'project'.

Note: This application is required on the participant computer during your tests.

LS_Analyzer_start
Arrow-Right-OrangeLogSquare Analyzer -  Used for reviewing previous recordings and analyzing the recorded data.
Even entering observational Codes and comments is possible while reviewing a recorded project.

The Analyzer also enables you to:

oPerform task, question and code-based analysis.

oReview the screen video, showing all user activities synchronized with the webcam recording.

oJump through the video by clicking Events in the log file.

oExport the original screen & user video as a combined video or seperately.

oExport a highlight videos (an edited version of your screen video) based on selected events from the log file.

oExport a picture-in-picture video that combines the screen and webcam recording, either at full length or edited based on selected events.

Note: This application is not needed on the participant computer during the test.

LS_Designer_start
Arrow-Right-OrangeLogSquare Designer - Enables you to predefine tasks, questions and codes to build a structured test case which is stored in a *.LogsquareScenario file.
This ensures that each participant must work its way through the same procedure during the test.

oWorking with tasks allows you to compare efficiency and effectiveness among participants.

oYou can limit the maximum time per task, to prevent endless sessions.

oTask-based sessions are structured identically, ensuring  all participants perform the same tasks.

oInserting questionnaires provides you with a structured list of comparable answers for all participants.

Note: This application is not required on the participant computer during the test.

Arrow-Right-OrangeRemote Observer - Separate application that can to connect to your Mangold LogSquare Recorder, allowing you to watch a current session from a viewing room. Depending on the Mangold Recorder you are connected to, additional functionalities are available.

In combination with the LogSquare Recorder you can:

oView the participant's screen content

oWatch the participant as recorded with the WebCam

oListen-in to the session, hearing both the user audio and the computer audio

oStart and Stop a recording session.

oStart and End tasks as specified in the scenario file in use

oChat with the participant

oEnter comments

oLog simple observational Codes
