First impressions count the most. That is why it is important to capture those instantly.
The moderator can enter comments about live impressions and observations or use a list of predefined Codes, to label certain occurrences with standard expressions.
To capture the personal impressions of the participant, a thinking aloud protocol might be a solution, but that means that you need to review the whole video to listen to those comments and label them accordingly.
Alternatively, you can offer the participant a short list of predefined labels (Codes) to express certain perceptions - those results are statistically available instantly.
Observations and impressions can be entered live or during review:
▪Live moderator observations are entered with the Mangold Remote Observer, as described in Log Live Observer Observations
▪Live participant impressions are entered through the Scenario panel on the LogSquare Recorder, as described in Log Participant Impressions.
▪Review observer observations are entered with the LogSquare Analyzer while replaying a previously recorded session. In that case, a more complicated coding system is possible.
▪For details read the section Log Observations.
IMPORTANT: There is a huge difference between the possibilities for collecting off-line Observations, Live Moderator observations and those for collecting Participant impressions!
Off-line Data Collection
With the LogSquare Analyzer it is possible to describe your observations by setting markers and logging Events after the participant has left the session.
Note: For coding during a live-observation you need to use the Mangold Remote Observer.
In order to create a structured data pool from your observations, that can be statistically analyzed and compared over multiple participants, you can define a set of Observation Codes that allow you to enter and describe your observations with just a click of your mouse.
The required complexity of your Observation Codes totally depend on the aim of your study.
Note: Participant Codes should only hold simple Markers (no duration) and no hierarchy levels, as the Observer Codes can - that would be too distracting from the actual task to be performed.
