How To....

INTERACT is used in a very wide range of studies. And each of those fields of application, refer to specific operations, routines, situations, or methods in even more different ways.

This makes it extremely difficult, to find expressions and name routines in a way that all users understand the same way. On top of that, INTERACT offers many functionalities that can be used for totally different purposes; or can be combined with other routines, to reach yet another goal.

All basic functionalities are described in the chapters Getting Started with INTERACT and Analysis with INTERACT within the INTERACT User Guide. Many more details about various routines, can be found in the INTERACT Help btn_help.

This topic lists specific user activities and refers to the corresponding INTERACT function(s) and hopes to serve as a translator.

Not all of the routines are described in the INTERACT User Guide. Some can only be found in the INTERACT Help file.

How to...

...change the program language?

INTERACT is available in multiple languages. Go to General - Program - SettingsBtn_ApplicationSettings, to see if your favorite language is available. Documentation is not available in all languages.

...solve video related issues?

Read the section Codecs and Playback Software.

...get statistics on frequency, duration and other value types, split per session?

All statistics available from within the Timeline Chart are split per DataSet, which usually also means per session. The basics of this powerful tool, are described in DataSet-based Statistics.

...get frequencies and durations per Class and Code, accumulated over multiple sessions?

Results per Class and accumulate over multiple sessions can be found in Class Report.

...create Events automatically?

INTERACT offers various routines to automatically create new Events, usually based on a combination of manually logged Events. An overview is listed in Create Events Automatically

...find co-occurring Codes and overlapping Events?

To get an overview about what other Codes were coded simultaneously with one specific Code, use the Trim on Code Filter. The statistics show you the totals per Code.

To create new Events for all occasions where a selection of Codes are all coded at the same time, use the Co-occurrence Filter.

To create Events for all patterns of overlapping Codes, use the Create Coding segments command, as explainted in Pattern Segmentation.

...combine Codes from different Classes?

To create combined expressions, based on separate Codes that were coded within the same Event, use the Move & Combine routine.

...create a hierarchical coding system?

Create multi-level Code definitions, linked with Lexical Chains, as is described in Define Codes - Lexical Chains.

...analyze data with more than one Code per Event?

If you have used an hierarchical coding system, without Prefixes, getting  the required results, probably needs combining the content of a number of Classes. If the results on a combination of information per Event is needed, use the Move & Combine routine to create the combinations you need.

...compare the coding quality of your raters?

For regular event based behavior, use the Kappa-Inter Rater Reliability routine.

...change the color or your Codes?

The colors of your Codes are created by default and can be changed in the CodeArchive editor. You can access this editor through the Time Line Chard legend.

...find coding errors?

Obvious errors like an start time that lays behind the offset of the same Event is checked automatically, the moment you open the Timeline Chart. The manual routine is available in Analysis - Verify - Check and Clean > Check all start and end times.

If specific codes are mutual exclusive, you can use the Co-occurrence filter to find any overlaps so you can identify those and correct them manually.

...identify what Code is followed by what other Code, how many times?

This is done using the Lag Sequential Analysis routine. This routine is only available within the Timeline Chart for the INTERACT Professional and Premium licenses.

...calculate the latencies between two specific Codes?

The Contingency analysis routine not only searches for the combination you entered, it can also create new Events that cover the exact gaps between the two occurrences.

...analyze Event based Codes per fixed interval?

It is possible to export any type of coded data in fixed interval lines with the methods listed in Interval based Export.

...rename coded Codes?

Use the Edit – Find & Replace - Replace btn_replace command, to replace your old expression with a new one.

...translate my Codes?

To include screenshots of your statistical results, in another language, in a presentation, you do not need to rename all Codes in all documents. Use the CodeArchive and the Abbreviation field for your translation, as is described in Translate Statistical Results, within the INTERACT Help.

...perform time sampling based observations?

This is explained in the section TIME SAMPLING - Log Codes per Interval within the INTERACT Help. A short description on how to create intervals can also be found in Create Fixed Intervals.

...analyze fixed intervals before and after  manually logged Events, with a specific Code?

There is an extension available called 'Create pre- and post- Events' that can help you here. The extension must be adapted to your Codes and Classes, in order to make it work.

...edit Multimedia Files?

This is only available for INTERACT Premium and INTERACT Professional licenses. For more information, read VIDEO EDITING.
